Storyline

America: After just two games in the tournament, the team moved up in the World Cup to take first place in the group heading for the knockout round. This is the 42nd time the United States has played against Mexico, connecting Sweden as the fourth most opponent in the team’s history, with the United States leading the series 39W-1D-1L, surpassing Mexico 171-15.

Head coach Vratko Andnovsky took advantage of player rotation throughout the group stage to keep the team fresh. After two games, Andnovsky used 22 of the 23 players, with the exception of his third goalkeeper, Aubrey Bledsbury. Similar adjustments may be made in-game with Mexico in the game plan, as tournament organizers are facing the elimination of qualifying spots and may play in a desperate tier.

Mexico: Head coach Monica Bergara and the team put all the pressure on them as tournament organizers, and the team underperformed significantly during the tournament. After a tactical failure and lack of coordination, they were forced into a winning scenario in the final group play. The team continued to win 10 undefeated games in a row ahead of the competition, including a four-game sweep in February and April during the Concacaf W qualifying tournament, surpassing their opponents 34-0.

Despite the impressive accumulation in the Concacaf W Championship, the team seemed to be retreating in shape, dropping the first two group games to Jamaica and Haiti.
