Virginia football shooting updates: Ex-player Chris Jones in custody for killings of three active players

Local police said Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., the former Virginia walk-on football player who killed three members of the 2022 Cavaliers football team and injured two others on Sunday night at a campus in Charlottesville, Virginia. was arrested. Football players Devin Chandler, Ravel Davis Jr. and DiShawn Perry were all shot dead, according to University of Virginia president Jim Ryan.

Two other players are hospitalized with gunshot wounds, one in critical condition and one in good condition.

Jones has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun. UVA Police Chief Tim Longo was informed at a news conference Monday morning that Jones had been taken into custody.

Jones was accused of shooting five people inside a bus on the parking deck of the Carbreth Garage at the UVA Central Ground at approximately 10:16 pm on Sunday. According to Ryan, the shooting happened after a class trip to see a play in Washington, D.C.

Jones is an active student in Virginia, but is no longer a member of the football team. He appears to have been last on the Cavaliers’ roster in 2018.

Coach Tony Elliott said: “Words have not been found to describe the devastation and heartache our team is feeling today after last night’s tragic events that resulted in the deaths of Lovell, DeShawn, Devin and other injured people. No,” he said in a statement. “They were incredible young people with big ambitions and a very bright future. Our hearts go out to their families, classmates and friends. Evacuation orders were lifted late Monday morning after campuses in Virginia were closed and classes canceled as the “exhaustive search” for Jones was completed. Canceled classes for more than 100 local students.

“This is an unimaginably sad day for our community,” Ryan said. “This morning, the entire university community is in mourning. My heart is breaking for the victims, their families, and everyone who knew and loved them. In my prayers, when I see my students, I can see my children.I can’t imagine anything worse for a parent than losing a child.We can do what we can to honor their lives. Please do all you can and know that we will soon come together as a community to mourn these losses.
