Warriors offseason: Draymond Green’s contract and James Wiseman’s role

of golden state warriors Games this month! Admittedly, this is a preseason game, but don’t worry. Before the calendar changes, a TV near you will be showing Warriors basketball.

So it seemed like the right time to create a mailbag. Let’s dive into the fun.

Be a valuable contributor off the bench, even if it’s a small role.

Wiseman will continue to be a name that comes to our minds when we think of Steve Kerr’s infamous “chasing for victory.” Kerr hired Wiseman for the 2020-21 season, growing the rookie on the spot despite sacrificing the team’s chances for short-term success.

That doesn’t happen much this year. With winning teams repeatedly chasing the title, Kerr will actually be chasing victory. We saw it last year in the usage of newcomers Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody. Flyerbut most only played if they could help the team.

It’s realistic for Wiseman to play 12 to 20 minutes a night this year, but if he’s contributing, he’s only given that much maximum time. And it’s also realistic. I think the goal should be an asset for those few minutes. To provide a strong pick-and-roll threat, make the occasional 3, perform better on the board, and maintain enough defense to allow the offense to shine.

It will be a fascinating year for him.

It’s really hard to say because we don’t know what they’ll look like when they become free agents.Klay Thompson still has two years left on his deal. Draymond Green is his first year and can optionally get his second year. Will they become All-NBA talent for championship teams when they become free agency, or will they become sentimental fan favorites for teams transitioning into the next era?

Either way, Clay is much more likely to get a significant pay cut than Dray, and not just because. Report Green Seeks Biggest Contract And they are willing to go outside the organization to find it.

First, Thompson has more room for salary cuts than Green. He’s making $15 million more than Dray this year, and he’ll make another $16 million in 2023-24 if Green opts in for the final year of his contract. He lives his maximum contract life, but not Dray. He can shave a lot of money off the deal and still make a bank, but Dray can’t.

Second, and more importantly, Thompson’s recent deal has taken good care of him. The Warriors signed him to a max deal less than three weeks after he tore his ACL, and they paid him his nearly $33 million for the 2019-20 season. He made over $35 million (over 150% of Green’s salary) in his 2020-21 year, which again he hasn’t played a single game.

The Warriors stars don’t have a cuddly relationship with Joe Lacob, as evidenced by Clay’s gratitude when he talks about his team investing in Bob Myers. It’s not lost on Clay that Dubs didn’t think twice and gave him the maximum contract because he knew Dubs wouldn’t play in his first year. It is haunting for him that three years into his five-year contract, he earned around $2 million for every game he played. He’s not going to take a pay cut to feed Lacob, but he’ll go into free agency feeling like the Warriors are taking care of him.

Not just how well they play, but how well Wiseman, Donte DiVincenzo and Jamaican Green play, how healthy the team stays and whether Andre Iguodala will come back. It depends, so I can’t say for sure.

But I expect them to play fairly regularly. No DNP-CDs received either. Both players have the opportunity to influence, but Dub doesn’t rely too much on either. I think it will be a fluid situation.

That said, we expect both Kuminga and Moody to be quality bench players this year and play key roles by the end of the season.

The simplest way to explain all your repeat customer tax questions is: It’s too early to start thinking about Klay’s extension, but the Warriors will definitely want to handle something in the pool.

October 18th — opening night — is the deadline to extend the pool. There’s no guarantee the teams will reach an agreement by then, but the Warriors will certainly invest in it.

We haven’t heard anything about the young player, other than one on last year’s roster posing for the cameras at Draymond’s wedding. You’re not always likely to do much in your off-season workouts.

No updates yet. The Warriors bring their cards closer to their chest. I think it will be news when the camp starts, but I don’t think you need to worry.

Two of the three have long-term contracts. Draymond is one of them. He may be the loudest, but unless the Warriors absolutely bomb this year, I don’t think Stephen Curry will be parting with the best defensive player in the world who tied his anchor.

A coin toss between Poole and Andrew Wiggins. If the Warriors had to make that decision now, they would re-sign Wiggins. I’ve been open about my opinion that Poole should take precedence over Wiggins, and I believe next year will prove that.

Still, if I had to make a prediction, I would reluctantly think Poole was a weirdo. Especially since they could extend him this year and trade him instead of just letting him walk.

Can you imagine Wiggins’ betting line leading the Warriors in 3-point shooting last year?

But no. never happen again. He’s benefited from the Warriors’ spacing and improved shots, but his 39.3% mark last year is the only time he’s shot more than 34% in his career. It’s the second time. Meanwhile, Curry and Thompson fell below 40% for the first time in their careers (excluding Curry’s five games in 2019-20).

I think Wiggins will have a strong 3-point season. Mid he’s in the Ranger’s place, hopefully we’ll see him in action. But he backs off on the negative and Splash Brothers backs off on the positive. It’s no shame that the greatest shooter in NBA history doesn’t repeat his percentage of 3-pointers as he is the best on a team with two.
