Washington women rowers finish in fourth place in NCAA championships after being in contention until the end

Again, it was a dramatic finish at the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships.

A year after losing to the historic three-way tiebreakers to Texas and Stanford, Husky was vying to re-enter the final race of the season at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.

Washington needed a special and amazing performance at Varsity 8 to win its third title in six seasons, but just 0.38 seconds behind fourth-placed California to settle for fifth place in the race. I had to.

Texas won the Varsity 8 and brought the Longhorns the second consecutive national championship.

The 5th place finish of UW Varsity 8 seeded in 8th place at the event gave Huskies a 4th overall finish in 3 races including the 2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 4.

Once again, Texas and Stanford ended in a draw in 1st place (this time without UW), and Texas won the tiebreaker again. This is the finish at Varsity 8. Princeton finished in 3rd place overall.

Huskys has performed in the top four for the fifth consecutive year and has been ranked in the top five for the seventh consecutive year.

Washington suffered from COVID-19 outbreaks and injuries throughout the season and was ranked 8th in the national championships. This is the lowest rank in a few years.

“If I had said I was competing for the podium in March (top four finishes), I would have said that it would take a lot of work to get there,” said Washington coach Yaz Farouk. .. “And this team fought like hell this season, and finishing on the NCAA podium was great and I couldn’t be any more proud.

“I think the weekend race was absolutely great.”

Washington finished third in Varsity 8, the second after Yale and Stanford, but was ahead of top-seeded Texas. The finish gave the Huskies a chance to win the title for his final race, Varsity Eight.

Husky 4 finished fifth in the final after finishing second in most of the race. However, Washington fell late and ended exactly at the seeded location.

UW’s victory over top-seeded Texas in the semi-finals on Saturday raised expectations for a better finish. And it seems that it was the case with the race of 2,000 meters and the remaining hundreds of meters.

However, while Princeton was cruising for victory, Ohio, Texas, and Stanford lag behind Washington to take second, third, and fourth place.

Husky’s college season is over, but not yet. They will be in England next month and will be competing in the Remenham Challenge Cup and Island Challenge Cup at the Henry Royal Regatta from June 28th to July 3rd.

“As the season goes on, the team is getting better and better, so it’s really exciting to see everyone training for another month and seeing how they can grow and improve across the pond.” Said Farooq. ..

Coaches are also excited about the next college season.

“We learned a lot from this year, and I think what we did this year was a big achievement,” she said. “I think there are many great races in our future.”
