WNBA/NCAAW: Whalen, Cash, Stanley and Grentz inducted into Hall of Fame

Lindsay Warren, Swin Cash, Marianne Stanley, and Teresa Shank-Grentz were the four women inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday night in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Warren’s speech was short and sweet and made the most people laugh. She tells a touching story about what her father gave her after she forgot her elbow pads for hockey practice, and how she’s been late or unprepared for practices and meetings ever since. She also incorporated Burger King into her speech and made it a point to talk about her first gold medal (London, 2012). She yelled out Minnesota’s women’s basketball team, and she concluded by saying, “Gogofers.”

Cash was very appreciative of her mother and the way she “competed in the game of life.” Jeno Auriemma took the stage with her during her speech, and Cash said some very wise things about her striving for perfection. U Conn, was not a realistic goal, but created good habits. She also guaranteed the 2002 Huskies (39-0) as the best women’s college team of all time. She then paid tribute to her WNBA career. Cash has played for five different her WNBA teams, but she won the most championships (out of three of her 2). She provided the story of how Laimbeer cried uncharacteristically when she tore her ACL in 2004.

Stanley talked about growing up just outside of Philadelphia and being inspired by the 1967 NBA champions. 76ersShe then spoke about how playing for Immaculata was one of the best decisions of her life, and how she was coached by Nancy Lieberman, who was on stage with her at Old Dominion, and also at USC. He talked about coaching Lisa Leslie on stage. She also said her favorite WNBA memories were winning Coach of the Year in 2002 and Washington in 2019 as her assistant coach for the Mystics where she won a WNBA championship. Told. She thanked Mystics head coach Mike Thibault for being in attendance.

Grenz was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his performances with Immaculata, won three consecutive AIAW National Championships, and was named to the All-American First Team three times. She was Stanley’s teammate on Immaculate, pointing out that she was the only other time two teammates had been inducted into her HOF in basketball on the same night (Charles Murphy and John Wooden, Purdue teammate, 1960). Grenz expressed her gratitude to all those who were involved in her time spent in her Immaculata and her coaching at St. Joseph’s Church. Rutgers and Illinois. Her stringer, the legendary C. Vivian who followed her at Rutgers University, took the stage with her.
