Junior guard Trey Galloway has returned to full live action as IU basketball opens practice – The Daily Hoosier

Indiana looks like a healthy team as the Hoosiers open practice this week for the 2022-23 season.

The only player known to have had a major procedure in the offseason was Trey Galloway, and as scheduled, he returned to action on an unrestricted basis at the start of practice. Even the timing was a bit conservative, in order to prevent the junior guard from pressing unnecessarily on the repaired groin.

“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs over the last few weeks, but 5v5 just started this week,” Galloway said during the show’s media day on Thursday. “I feel like I’ve been pretty prepared over the last few weeks, but there’s no rush, so I’ve just been trying to protect myself.”

Galloway had hoped the groin injury he sustained in February would heal on its own during the offseason, but it became clear by June that he would need surgery. The groin procedure required a long recovery period, but it was done with the understanding that Galloway would make a full recovery by now.

It was the third time in the past eight months that Galloway has returned to the court after sustaining an injury. First was his broken wrist, then the original injury in his groin. Culver, Indiana’s product seemed like he wouldn’t miss it when it came to shaping the game and having the ability to play with his trademark aggressive, physical style.

His return to live basketball took time, but Galloway has been focusing on his cardiovascular system for a while and is back on track, he says.

“Before I started cutting and all this stuff, I was running on the treadmill and trying to get my body right. I think I’m back to normal,” she said.

The key to Galloway continuing to see significant playing time this year is likely his ability to make jump shots. I could also

“Shooting more match-like shots is the biggest thing for me, and I feel like I’ve done a good job with that.

Back on the court, Galloway faced more competition for playing time than he had seen in his first two years at IU. In each of his freshman and sophomore seasons, he appeared in the starting lineup before suffering an injury.

He now has players competing for backcourt time, including promising freshman Jalen Hood-Schifino and sophomore Tamar Bates. Galloway has not denied the competition is tougher, but he likes what that means for his team this year, as well as his own growth.

“There’s a lot of talent. It’s been really good for us,” Galloway said. it will be better.”

IU’s collection of seasoned talent and promising freshman classes has also caught the attention of the outside world.

For the first time in his college career, Galloway will be playing for a team with high expectations ahead of the season.

He’s happy to be back on the floor battling playtime, but he doesn’t want to get caught up in the noise outside.

“If we haven’t won the game yet, it’s always too early. We have to prove it,” said Galloway.
